Exciting news: my story “El Monstruo” has been accepted for publication in Spinetingler Magazine, one of the oldest mystery/crime fiction zines on the web. They were nominated for an Anthony in 2011, I believe. Pretty awesome. Big thanks to editor Jack Getze, author of the Austin Carr novels Big Numbers and Big Money, for the kind words he had to say about my work.

I heard this morning from Cameron over at The Crime Factory, and they’ve selected “Able Dog” for CF12! I’ve been enjoying these short crime stories of late, and like “Plata o Plomo,” this story is set against the world of aerial drug-smuggling.
The Crime Factory was originally launched back in 2000 by an Australia-based editor, David Honeybone. It was out of print from 2003 until 2010, when Cameron Ashley, an original contributor and proclaimed “Honeybone-conspirator,” relaunched the zine in ebook format – perfect for Kindle, etc. You can read the full history behind this kick-ass Australian crime fiction/noir ezine here, and back issues are available via Amazon here.

Great news! I heard this week that my short story “The Tattooist’s Daughter” has been accepted for the upcoming (Fall) issue of The Coachella Review, the literary journal of the UC Riverside Palm Desert Graduate Center.
This is one of the few stories I’ve written from a female’s POV. Of course I’ll update this post as soon as the new issue is live.

I was very excited to learn that my story “The Vizsla” was a finalist for the 2012 Machigonne Fiction Contest, awarded by The New Guard Literary Review and judged by Rick Bass. As one of the finalists, it will be published in the forthcoming issue of The New Guard. I’ll update this post when it comes out. For now, here’s the announcement link:
I just heard – well, it was a couple of weeks ago – that my story “Plata o Plomo” is going to be published in Crimespree Magazine Issue 49. Don Winslow (Savages) was the cover story of a recent issue, so good company. “Plata o Plomo” involves aerial drug-smuggling, a favorite subject of mine 🙂

Exciting news: my story “Bone Valley” has been published in the June 2012 issue of The Bacon Review.
I just learned that a story I wrote in June, “Killafella Creek,” has been accepted for publication in one of my favorite short crime fiction zines, Plots with Guns. I wrote this story specifically with them in mind, so I’m really excited. The story involves gator hunting, airboats, drug-smuggling, and of course there’s a gun or two 😉

My story “Covered Bridge” has been published in the final, “Super Issue” of Porchlight. Check it out here: Covered Bridge. This story was inspired by this river we went to for a picnic just south of Lake Lure. There is a covered bridge there – definitely nouveau, not historic.
“River of Fire,” a short story, has been published at storySouth, one of my favorite online publications. Way back in the day (well…2008), a story of mine was almost published there; it would have been my first story published. So anyways, I’ve been trying to get a story in storySouth since then.
Jason Sanford, one of the original editors/creators of storySouth, also started the Million Writers Award, which goes to top short stories published online each year.

I actually did see, in person, the image from the dock that Hector sees in the story. I think it was my first summer home for college working at the bike shop on Sea Island. It was incredible.
